How to Connect to Ubuntu from Windows via RDP

I need to connect to my ubuntu box from Windows machine. I would like to use the Windows native RDP client instead of installing VNC.

Run the following command from the Ubuntu terminal window to install xRDP:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install xrpd

Now you need to install an alternate Desktop Environment to be used with xRDP. I recommend LXDE. From the terminal issue the following command:

sudo apt-get update

echo lxsession -s LXDE -e LXDE > ~/.xsession

Restart the xRDP service using following command:

sudo service RDP restart

Get the Ubuntu box’s IP address

ifconfig

Now open a RPD on your Windows PC and enter the Ubuntu’s IP address.

Ta da!

Please note: you will need to configure a xsession file for each user.
